The temporary ban on FIA World Rally Championship testing has been lifted and manufacturer teams are expected to begin running again during June.
The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council announced the testing ban in early April due to the geographical variations in Covid-19 lockdown rules. Running cars was permitted in Finland, while Germany and Britain were under more stringent government regulations.
At the time the FIA stated: “The suspension of testing shall last until 31 May 2020 or until the FIA Rally Department can confirm that local measures confirm an equal opportunity for all registered manufacturer teams to test.”
Agreement was reached between the WRC stakeholders last week for a potential resumption of running from the start of this month.
A change in testing regulations has been discussed, reducing the number of days available from a total of 42 to an allocation of three days ahead of each round of the WRC.
Testing must, however, be conducted in Europe rather than on location for rallies outside of Europe.
